Packing books and records for a Kansas City move
Small boxes. Vinyl on edge. A bookcase is furniture once it is empty. How we pack Kansas City books and records — not a living-room tour.
Books are weight. Records are weight that hates a flat stack. Small cartons. Vinyl on edge. Empty the case before we tip it. Packing the living room is the sofa and the TV. Home office is papers and the desk — the desk page is next. This page is the shelves. Two ZIP codes: Get my price. We will not write “licensed and insured.”
If you book packing: standard $10–20, wardrobe $25–30, dish pack $30–40 — packing. A dish pack is not a record crate. We will not invent a collectible insurance figure. Damage: [TIM'S DAMAGE POLICY]. What I will honour: [WHAT TIM WILL HONOUR].
Boxes you can lift
- Small cartons for books — not one box you cannot pick up
- Vinyl on edge, not flat in a tower — jackets stay with the disc if you care
- CDs and tapes in a small box, not a garbage bag
- Empty the bookcase. We will not carry a loaded oak case down a walk-up — walk-ups
- What is not coming — donate before we tape — how to thin out, what you are not taking
Label the room, not “misc heavy” — how to label boxes. Spare-room shelves first — what to pack first. A case that will not turn is empty furniture — furniture that will not turn, stairs and tight turns. Pads on the case — how we pad and wrap furniture.
Records are not books
On edge. A milk crate that flexes is how jackets crease. We will move a real crate if it is closed and you can still lift a corner. We will not stack flats of vinyl under a dresser. Heat in a closed truck in August is a conversation — July and August. Rain on open jackets: rain and ice. We are movers. We will not grade your pressings.
Framed album art is glass — moving mirrors and framed art. A china cabinet of figurines is not this page — china and glass. TVs and turntables: TVs.
The case is the other job
Built-in shelves are millwork unless you unbolt them. A cheap particle case may not survive a third-floor tip — say if it is coming. Living room, dining, bedroom, office: packing the living room, packing the dining room, packing a bedroom, home office. Kids’ books: packing the kids’ rooms. Garage sale leftovers in the shed: garage as a room, workshop.
A long carry with small heavy boxes is still a carry — long carry and shuttle. Two people on a third-floor library may need a third — when you need a third, how we staff three. Labour only still needs the cases empty — labour-only. How long: how long a local move takes. If it runs long we will not invent one giant box — what we do if it runs long.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use one big box for the whole shelf?
No. Small cartons. A box you cannot lift is how the hour count moves and how backs fail.
Vinyl flat or on edge?
On edge. Flat stacks crush jackets. We will not grade the pressing.
Leave books in the bookcase?
No. Empty it. A loaded case on a walk-up is a different crew.
Is this the living room page?
That page is the room. This page is books and records. Read both if the shelves are in the front room.
Office law books?
Same small-box rule. See home office. The desk is the next page.
Small boxes. Empty cases.
Two ZIP codes and whether the shelves are coming. We will write the weight we can actually lift.
