Walk-up apartment moves in Kansas City

What we need to know

• Which floor you are leaving, and which floor you are going to
• Lift or no lift at either end
• How far the door is from where a truck can legally sit
• Building rules — reserved dock, two-hour window, no moves on Sunday
• Size of the place: studio, one bed, two bed, or a few items
• Packing — none, kitchen only, or the lot
• Awkward pieces: piano, china cabinet, fridge on a landing

Stairs measured before the truck leaves

A dresser that turned in the old place may not turn on the new landing. A sofa that came up in 1998 may not want to come down in one piece. We would rather hear that on the walkthrough than at the elbow of the stair.

Photos of the stairwell, the door widths, and the path to the truck are enough if you cannot do an in-person walkthrough. A video walking the route is better. That is how we price what a Kansas City move costs on a third floor instead of guessing from the bed count.

The truck and the street

Older KC streets were not drawn for a 26-footer. Neighbours parked on both sides. A loading zone that is really a bus stop. We plan the truck before we plan the sofa. If we need a smaller truck and more trips, that is a different number — we will say so rather than force a big box onto a brick street off 71.

Uprights still need a crew who have done stairs. Do not assume two people and a blanket. Put it on the form.

Kitchens and small apartments

A one-bed still has a kitchen. Plates standing up, glasses wrapped, knives separate — how to pack a kitchen. Dish packs are $30–40. If you are moving on a Friday and working Thursday, leave the kitchen to us. Per-box prices are on packing.

Appliances in a walk-up: the fridge has to turn the same corners as the sofa. Disconnect and hookup is appliances, not an extra on the landing.

Labour only from a walk-up

If you hired a truck and need people who will take a dresser down three flights without putting it through the drywall, that is labour only. Tell us the floor count. Two people is not automatically enough.
