How to pack a kitchen without breaking half of it

The kitchen is the room most people regret packing themselves. Not because it is hard to understand — because it is easy to rush, and glass does not forgive being stacked flat in a thin box.

What a packed kitchen is actually made of

• Dish packs for plates and glass — double-ply, $30–40
• Standard boxes for pantry, utensils, unbreakable kit — $10–20
• A separate knife plan, not a kettle full of cutlery
• Empty small appliances — crumbs and all
• The cabinet itself if it is a china or curio

A typical kitchen is around six or seven dish packs. Boxes and materials are included when we pack. The full table and the $1,200–$1,500 / $3,000–$4,000 local-move callout sit on the packing page. That range is what changes a Kansas City price when you add full packing to the labour.

Plates

Do the plates standing up, not stacked flat. Wrap each one. Dish packs exist for a reason. A set of plates costs more than the box. If you only buy one kind of carton for the whole kitchen, buy dish packs for the breakable shelf and use standard boxes for the rest.

Glasses and anything with a stem

Glasses go in after plates, still wrapped. Stems get paper in the bowl and a wrap around the stem. Do not nest them naked. Do not use a grocery bag as padding and call it done.

China cabinets are a different job. Shelves out. Glass padded. Three layers on anything with glass in it — pads, cardboard, then wrap. That is china cabinets, not a kitchen-box problem.

Knives and the last-minute drawer

Knives separately, blades wrapped, in a box you can label as knives. Do not pack the kettle full of cutlery and hope. The “I’ll just throw the rest in” drawer is how people cut themselves on unpacking day.

Light drawers on the furniture can stay. Heavy ones — books, tools, kitchenware — should come out. We will tell you which on the walkthrough. Same rule as houses and apartments.

Small appliances and the fridge

Empty them. The toaster with last week’s crumbs is a mess on the other end, not a time saver. Coffee machines: dump the water. If the fridge and washer are coming with you, that is appliances — disconnected, moved, hooked back up — not something you wedge into a dish pack.

Order of work if you have one evening

• Pull the glass and plates first — they take the time
• Pantry and tins second — they are heavy; do not overfill a standard box
• Utensils and the junk drawer third
• Leave a kettle, two mugs, and a frying pan out until the morning
• Label two sides of every box, not the top. Stacks hide tops.

When to stop and let us do it

If the cabinet is glass, the set was a wedding present, or you are already behind on the rest of the house, stop. We pack kitchens most weeks. The person who priced the move is the person on the job — that’s Tim.
