A baby grand out of a third-floor walk-up in Brookside
How we size that job in the meantime.

The write-up The method does not. Three layers on the finish. Enough crew. Stairs measured before the truck leaves the yard. That is how a piano comes down a Brookside walk-up — baby grand, upright, or player. Type and floor on the request. The form is Get my price.
Brookside sits on the Kansas City page with Waldo, Hickman Mills, and the older brick streets that a 26-footer has to be talked down before it turns onto them. Walk-ups with no lift are normal there, not an exception. Tight residential streets off 71 are the other half of the same job.
What this page is, and is not
This is not a made-up job story. stays visible until Tim has photos and a write-up from the actual move. Until then, this page is the method we already use on that kind of access: third floor, no lift, a baby grand, Brookside loading.
The general piano guide is piano moves in Kansas City. The building half is walk-up apartment moves. Read those if you have an upright on a second floor or a sofa that has to turn the same landing. This page stays on the baby grand and the three flights.
What we need before we send a crew
- Upright, baby grand, grand, or player — a side photo if you are not sure
- Which floor it is on now, and which floor it is going to
- Lift or walk-up at either end. Brookside is usually walk-up
- Whether the stair is straight, has a landing, or turns
- Door widths on the unit, the stairwell, and the street door
- How far a truck can legally sit from that door
- The rest of the move — whole house or the piano on its own
- Anything else awkward on the same path: china cabinet, fridge, safe
Photos of the instrument, each flight, the landing, and the path to the curb are enough to start. A video walking from the piano to the street is better. We do not send two people and find out on the drive. That is the same rule as the pianos specialty page.
The stair is the job
A baby grand is not an upright tipped on a pad. Legs off. Board protected. Weight shared. The stair has to take the width and the turn. A landing that was never drawn for a harp will stop the job if we first see it with the piano in the air.
Measure the stair before anyone leans it. Width at the rail, width at the wall, height of the newel, and whether a door at the bottom opens into the flight. If a dresser already scrapes, the piano will not invent space. Same habit as a split-level in Independence — different house, same refusal to guess.
Three layers on the finish: pads, then a hard layer, then wrap. Corners get their own protection. The bench is not “also the piano.” It is a second piece with its own path.
Brookside streets and the truck
Kansas City moves have their own quirks. Tight residential streets off 71. Walk-ups with no lift. We have done enough of them to plan around it rather than find out on the day. Brookside and Waldo brick streets were not drawn for a 26-footer. Neighbours parked on both sides. A loading zone that is really a fire lane.
We plan the truck before we plan the piano. If the street only takes a smaller box and more trips, that is a different number — we will say so rather than force a long truck onto a curb that will not hold it. Same access question as Raytown lots and the square in Independence. The suburb page lists Brookside with Waldo, Hickman Mills, Martin City, Ruskin Heights, Midtown, Plaza, Westport.
Crew size is not a slogan
Enough people on the weight. That is the sentence. Two movers and a truck from $160 an hour is the house-move starting point on this site, not a baby-grand-down-three-flights rate. A third floor with no lift adds hands. A player or a full grand adds more. We would rather put the extra person on the quote than ask the stair to hold what two people cannot.
I quote it and I am on most of them. Call (816) 299-7989 if you would rather talk than type — about.
Piano-only, or the rest of the apartment
Most piano jobs sit inside a house or apartment move. The piano still sets the crew. Packing the kitchen does not. If you also want packing, per-box prices are on that page: standard $10–20, wardrobe $25–30, dish pack $30–40. Kitchen method: how to pack a kitchen.
A piano-only job is still two ZIP codes and the floor count. Labor only does not mean two friends and a blanket — if you hired the truck, we still send the right number of people. More on labour-only moving.
White glove is more wrap and more time on the same crew, not a different company. Say so if the finish or the rest of the house needs that handling.
The other end of the move
A third-floor walk-up in Brookside into a ranch in Lee's Summit is two different jobs glued together. The piano still has to come down the flights, then sit, then go in through a garage or a front door that may be easier. Tell us both floors. A Johnson County house with a long drive adds a carry after the stairs — Johnson County house move checklist. We mention Overland Park and Leawood here because that is where a lot of these instruments land. Those suburb pages stay unpublished until Kansas authority is confirmed. ZIP codes or the phone for a price. Live list: service areas.
If the destination is another walk-up — Waldo, a brick street in the city, a third floor again — say that. Two walk-ups is not “the same quote twice.” It is two measured stairs.
What the price is actually for
There is no honest one-line piano price without the stairs. Local moves overall land between $1,200 and $1,500 before full packing; a baby grand on a third floor is one of the things that moves that number. Full packing on a house can sit in the $3,000–$4,000 band we already publish. The breakdown is what changes the price. Compare quotes on the same floor count and the same instrument — comparing Kansas City movers.
We will not invent a star rating to sell the job. Google is 4.8 from 54 reviews. We will not write “licensed and insured.” We will not publish interstate work.
When we will write the actual job
That line is waiting on photos and a short write-up: what was awkward, how it was handled, how long it took. Same rule as the Kansas City area card:. Until those are in, we will not fill this page with a story we did not do on camera.
If you have that piano now, you do not need the finished story to get a number. You need the type, the floor, and two ZIP codes. Book the date in the four weeks if you can. Nearby published pages: Grandview, Raytown, Independence, Blue Springs.
Frequently asked questions
Why is there no Brookside job story?
Because we will not invent one. The method page still stands. Photos and a short write-up from that move can go here later.
Can you still quote my baby grand?
Yes. Type, floors, and photos of the stair. The missing job story does not block a written number.
Do you move pianos on the Kansas side?
Yes. Johnson County most weeks. Use ZIP codes or the phone. Kansas area pages stay unpublished until authority is confirmed.
Will you tune it after?
We move it. Tuning is a tuner. Moving can put a piano out even when nothing is damaged.
What if I only have the piano and a few boxes?
Still two ZIP codes and the floor. Labour-only if you have the truck — tell us the flights so we send enough people.
