Storage-unit loading in Kansas City

What we need to know

• Load into the unit, empty the unit, or both ends on the same day
• Unit size if you know it — a photo of the open door is better
• Ground floor drive-up, or an indoor hall and a lift
• Facility hours and whether we need a gate code
• What is going in — furniture, boxes, a piano, a safe
• The house access at the other end — stairs, walk-up, garage

Photos of the unit door, the hall, and the house stair beat “a 10x10” — photos that get a written price. We do not guess whether a sofa will turn in their corridor.

The facility is the access

Drive-up units are a truck sit and a short carry. Indoor units are carts, a lift booking, and a hall that was not drawn for a dresser. Same family of rules as HOA and building rules: get their hours in writing if you can. We will not invent a facility permit.

What goes in, and how it sits

Heavy first, path left open if you will visit the unit. Mattresses bagged — beds and disassembly. TVs upright — TVs and electronics. A garage dumped into a unit is still a room’s worth of time. Paint and fuel stay off the truck; a later post covers that list.

We will not pack a unit like a showroom unless you booked white glove time. Standard is pads on furniture and boxes stacked so the door still closes. Packing per box if we are boxing the house first.

Emptying a unit into a house

Tell us the new place’s stairs. A unit into a walk-up is two access problems. A unit into a town home needs the visitor bay. New construction that is not dry yet is a later guide — say if the house is not ready.

A unit that is really a cleanout — dump the lot — call first. When a cleanout is the job.

Price

Two stops change the hour count. A small unit next to the house is not the same as a facility across the metro and a third-floor walk-up.
