How to label boxes for Kansas City movers

Room name on two sides, not a novel on the lid. How we read a Kansas City load so the right boxes land in the right room.

Write the room on two sides. Not a paragraph on the tape. We read boxes while we walk. A lid that only says “misc” is how the kitchen and the garage trade contents at the other end. This page is the labelling we can actually use on a Kansas City local move. Two ZIP codes: Get my price.

Labelling is not packing. Packing order is what to pack first. Method by room: kitchen, living room, bedroom, bathroom, kids’ rooms, workshop. Per box if you book it: standard $10–20, wardrobe $25–30, dish pack $30–40 — packing.

What we need to see from the hall

  • Destination room — kitchen, master, kids, garage — not “stuff”
  • Two sides, marker, letters big enough to read at a walk
  • FRAGILE on glass and dish packs, not on every sweater tote
  • OPEN FIRST on the coffee kit, meds bag you are not keeping, and the toolkit
  • NOT GOING on anything that stays — what you are not taking

Do not write a packing list on the lid and expect us to inventory it on the stair. We are movers. We will put the box in the room you named. We will not unpack it into the right cabinet unless you booked that — white glove, white glove vs standard.

Room names that survive two addresses

Label for the house you are going to, not the one you are leaving. “Front bedroom” in a Raytown ranch is not “front bedroom” in a two-story in Lee’s Summit. Use a name someone can point at: kitchen, dining, living, office, garage, basement, master, kids — Ava, not “pink room” if the new place is beige. Home office papers: moving a home office. Dining glass: china and glass.

If two rooms share a name, add a wall or a colour. If you are downsizing, say which boxes are storage and which are the smaller place — senior downsizing, storage unit loading (local only). A cleanout is not a labelled load — when a cleanout is the job, cleanouts.

What not to write on the box

  • A full inventory. That is your notebook, not the carton
  • Valuables — jewelry, cash, documents ride with you — what not to put on the truck
  • “Heavy” on a box you cannot lift. Use a smaller box
  • Arrow art that contradicts how the box is taped
  • A joke instead of a room. We will not decode it on a third-floor walk-up

Wardrobe boxes already tell us they are clothes. Still mark which closet — packing a bedroom. Dish packs already tell us they are kitchen glass. Still mark kitchen vs china cabinet. TVs do not go in a box with “electronics” and a sofa cushion — TVs. Beds and hardware bags stay with the bed they belong to — beds and disassembly.

Colour tape is optional. A system is not.

A roll of green for kitchen and blue for bedrooms helps if you brief us at the door. A legend on the fridge that we never see does not. Tell us the colour map on moving-day morning or in the notes — what to tell us before moving day. Kids and pets still need a room that is not the path — kids and pets.

Labour only still needs labels if you want rooms to match — labour-only. Your rental, your boxes, our backs. Garage as a room gets “garage” or “shed,” not “misc 14” — garage and shed, workshop, Blue Springs garage-first.

When the calendar and the weather mess the labels

Tape fails in heat and in a wet porch. Write on the cardboard, not only the tape. July and August: moving in July and August. Winter: winter moving day. Rain: rain and ice. Month-end still fills — month-end. School-year: Lee's Summit school-year. How long the day runs: how long a local move takes.

Access does not read your handwriting

A walk-up is faster when the box already says the floor — walk-ups, stairs and tight turns. Furniture that will not turn is not a labelling problem — furniture that will not turn. Parking still decides the sit — parking and permits. Waldo brick. Midtown. Northland. Town homes. HOA.

Kansas City. Independencesplit-levels. Raytownranch. Blue Springs. Grandview71 corridor. Lee's Summit. Johnson County — mention only. Johnson County checklist. Live list: service areas.

Awkward still needs a name, not a sticker: pianospiano moves, baby grand ([REAL JOB] stays). Safessafes. Hot tubshot tub moves. Pool tablespool table moves. China. Houses and apartments. Officesoffice hours. Applianceswashers. New construction: new-construction. Four weeks: four weeks. After the form: after you request a price. Two movers: two movers and a truck. Compare hours: how to compare hourly quotes. How we quote: two ZIP codes. Photos: photos that get a written price. Weekend vs weekday: weekend vs weekday. Same-day: same-day.

Frequently asked questions

Is a number system enough?

Only if we also have the room. 47 means nothing on a third-floor landing. Room first. Number if you want it for your list.

Should we label the lids or the sides?

Sides. Two of them. A lid disappears in a stack.

You are packing some rooms.

Say which. We will mark what we pack. We will not guess the guest room vs the kitchen.

What about totes?

Same rule. Room on two sides. A clear tote is not a label.

Can you unpack by the labels?

We place by the room you wrote. Unpacking into cabinets is white glove if we agreed it.

Room on two sides. Then the ZIPs.

Two ZIP codes and which rooms you are labelling yourself. We will write the number for the load we can actually sort.
