Moving in July and August in Kansas City
Heat, school calendars, and the same month-end pile. What changes on a Kansas City move when the truck sits in July or August — and what does not.
July and August in Kansas City are not a different kind of house. They are a different kind of day. Heat on the stair. A school calendar that will not wait. The same last-Saturday pile as any other month, stacked on top. Month-end and the first is the lease and the closing. This page is the two months when those days also come with a 95-degree curb and a Tuesday the kids start class. Two ZIP codes: Get my price.
From [$XXX] an hour for two movers and a truck — two movers and a truck. We do not publish a summer surcharge on this page. Hours still move with access, leftover loose stuff, and whether the walk-up has shade. Compare the same list: how to compare hourly quotes. How we write from ZIPs: how we quote from two ZIP codes.
What July and August actually add
- Heat on a third-floor walk-up — walk-ups, stairs and tight turns
- School-year Saturdays that fill in Lee's Summit first — school-year moves
- The same 31st and 1st as every other month — month-end
- Afternoon storms that wet the path — rain and ice
- Garages still holding the summer — garage as a room
A Thursday in June is a different board than the Saturday before classes. Weekend vs weekday still applies. Heat does not invent a new rule. It makes the old ones slower. Book in the four weeks window if you can. Same-day in the last week of July is the least likely yes — same-day and short notice.
Heat on the path, not a slogan
We drink water. We take the stair in shorter trips when the landing is an oven. We will not pretend a third-floor carry in August is the same hour count as a ranch with the truck at the garage. Say the floors on the form — what to tell us before moving day. A photo of the stair in the afternoon is worth more than a morning walkthrough — photos that get a written price.
Leave the air on at both ends if you still have the keys. A closed house at 11 a.m. in August is how cardboard goes limp and how a crew slows. Kids and pets still need a plan that is not the stair — kids and pets. A dog in a hot garage while we load is not a plan. Morning-of: moving-day morning.
Appliances that still have food in them are a July problem. Empty the fridge the night before. We will not haul a full freezer across a hot lot and call it done — appliances, basement washers. What stays off the truck stays off in August too — what not to put on the truck.
School calendars shove the weekend
Lee's Summit is the obvious clock. It is not the only one. Independence, Raytown, Blue Springs, Grandview, and Kansas City proper all have families who will not move the Tuesday after school starts. The Saturday before is the job. That is why Lee's Summit school-year fills first, and why a weekday two weeks earlier is the day that still has a crew.
Kids’ rooms in the middle of the pack order, not first — packing the kids’ rooms, what to pack first. Beds you still sleep in stay until morning — beds and disassembly. If the new place is a new build that slips, say so when the superintendent moves you — new-construction. We will not hold a Friday we already gave to someone else unless we said we would — after you request a price.
Storms, not ice
August in Kansas City is rain that arrives at 3 p.m. and is gone by 4. We pad the path. We do not leave open boxes on a porch. Ice is the winter stop — this page is not that page. Wet cardboard and a piano on a slick stair are still a delay. Call (913) 957-9311 when the forecast turns. Method: rain and ice. How long the day runs: how long a local move takes.
Garages, sheds, and the summer still in them
July is when the garage is still a room and the lawn tools are still out. Pack it early. Load it first if that door has to stay a door — Blue Springs garage-first, garage and shed, workshop. A hot tub on a pad in August is the same job as October, with less patience from the neighbours — hot tubs, hot tub moves. Pool tables do not get lighter in heat — pool tables, pool table moves.
What you are not taking — mark it now, not on the morning we are standing in the heat — what you are not taking. A house that is still loose bags in late July is closer to when a cleanout is the job and cleanouts than to a standard load. Downsizing on a school clock: senior downsizing.
Packing when the house still has to work
Spare rooms first. Kitchen last. Per box if you book it: standard $10–20, wardrobe $25–30, dish pack $30–40 — packing. Kitchen method: how to pack a kitchen. Living room, bedroom, bathroom: living room, bedroom, bathroom. Home office papers you can live without: home office. TVs last among electronics if you still watch them — TVs. China you do not use weekly can go early — china and glass.
Labour only still needs the first rooms boxed — labour-only. Full packing is what pushes a $1,200–$1,500 local move toward $3,000–$4,000 — what a Kansas City move costs, what changes the price. Offices around your hours do not care that it is August — offices, office hours.
Access does not get easier because it is summer
Parking and permits still decide the sit. Waldo brick still takes a truck that will not flex. Midtown, Plaza, Westport already have other trucks on the curb. Northland cul-de-sacs still do not like a 26-footer. Town homes and condos still have a desk window — HOA. Furniture that will not turn does not loosen in heat — furniture that will not turn.
Kansas City. Independence — split-levels. Raytown — ranch and basement. Blue Springs — garage-first. Grandview — 71 corridor. Lee's Summit — school-year first. Johnson County — mention only. Pages unpublished. Johnson County checklist. Live list: service areas.
Awkward items still need a name
Pianos — piano moves, baby grand ([REAL JOB] stays). Safes — safes and gun safes. Hot tubs. Pool tables. China cabinets. White glove — white glove vs standard. Houses and apartments. Storage local only — storage unit loading. We will not write an interstate hold because August is busy. No long-distance on this page.

Frequently asked questions
Is July more expensive than October?
Not as a published surcharge. The Saturday before school and the 31st fill first. Hours still come from access and what is left loose.
We have to move the weekend before school starts.
Ask early. That weekend is a Lee's Summit-style clock even if you are not in Lee's Summit. See school-year moves and month-end.
Will heat cancel the day?
Heat slows a walk-up. It does not cancel a ranch with shade and water. Ice is the stop. See rain and ice.
Should we leave the air off to save money?
No. Leave it on at both ends if you have the keys. A closed house in August is slower and harder on boxes.
Can we take a Thursday in July instead of that Saturday?
Ask. Mid-month weekdays are a different pile. We will write the day that still has people.
Name the Saturday you actually have
Two ZIP codes, July or August, and the weekday you could take if the school weekend is gone. We will write the number for the day that still has the crew.
