Kids and pets on a Kansas City moving day

Moving day in Kansas City is already a door, a stair, and a truck. Add a dog that wants the open front door, or a three-year-old who wants the same stair we are carrying a dresser down, and the clock changes. This is not a childcare guide. It is what we need from you so the crew can work the house you booked.

We will not watch a child. We will not walk a dog. We will not “keep an eye on the cat” while we pad a sofa. If that is the only plan, change it before we arrive.

Why this belongs on a moving page

Saturday is when most families want to move and when most sitters are already booked. If the children can only be elsewhere on Saturday, book Saturday and book the sitter in the four weeks. Children

Pack the kids’ rooms last if they are sleeping there the night before, same habit as a kitchen you still need. When we pack those rooms: labelled boxes, not a pile of stuffed animals in a trash bag we have to guess. If the job is a downsize and the toys are the cleanout, say so — senior downsizing and when a cleanout is the job are different clocks.

Beds come apart when we say they will — beds and disassembly. Do not leave a child asleep in a bed we were told was empty. That sounds obvious. It has happened on other crews. Tell us the truth about the morning.

Dogs, cats, and the rest

• Crate, closed bathroom, or off site. An open house with an open door is not a plan
• We will not crate an animal we have not been asked to touch — and we would rather not touch it
• Litter, food, and bowls in a closed box if they are coming. Not loose in a hallway
• A backyard gate that has to stay shut: say so, and put a person on it
• Exotics, birds, aquariums: you move them, or a specialist does. We will not invent a livestock run

What stays off the truck still stays off the truck — what not to put on the truck. An aquarium with water in it is not a box. A bag of open kibble in the garage is still a bag in the garage room — garage and shed as a room. Chemicals and flea bombs stay off.

HOA and building rules sometimes ban animals in the loading zone or the lift. Read that before Saturday — HOA and building rules. A Kansas City walk-up with a no-pets-in-the-hall rule still has a dog that needs a route that is not our stair.

The morning order

People first, animals second, then the crew. If the sitter is late, we can start on a garage or a packed room that is empty of kids. We cannot start a front-door carry with a dog in the threshold. Photos of the stair and the drive still matter more than a photo of the dog. Send access — photos that get you a written price. Mention “two dogs, crate in the laundry” in the notes so we do not open that door first.

What we will not do

• Babysit, even “for a minute while I run the key”
• Let a pet ride in the cab as a favour
• Chase an animal that got out because a door was our load path
• Take a crate as a white-glove item if it is soiled — we will say so
• Write a long-distance pet relocation. Local house to house only
