Packing the living room for a Kansas City move
Shelves, glass, the TV, and the sofa that may not turn. How we pack a Kansas City living room — and what we need you to do before the truck sits.
The living room is the room people leave for last and the room the crew sees first. Shelves still loaded. A TV on a stand that has never come off the wall. A sofa that will not make the landing. Glass on a coffee table that is also a crate of remotes. This page is how that room gets into boxes and onto the truck in Kansas City.
Two ZIP codes start the price: Get my price. Packing is per box if you book it — packing: standard $10–20, wardrobe $25–30, dish pack $30–40. The kitchen is a different page — how to pack a kitchen. This one is the front room.
What to finish before we arrive
- Shelves empty. Books in small boxes, not one box you cannot lift
- Glass off tables and out of display cabinets — or book a dish pack
- TV unmounted if you can do it; if not, say so — TVs and electronics
- Cables in a labelled bag, not a nest behind the stand
- What is not coming marked — what you are not taking
- Kids and pets out of the path — kids and pets on moving day
A china cabinet in the living room is not a bookcase. Shelves out, glass padded — china cabinet and glass moves. A piano against the wall is a piano — piano moves, Brookside baby grand ([REAL JOB] stays). A pool table in the same room is a different crew.
The sofa and the turn
Measure the landing before you assume the sectional rides assembled. Furniture that will not turn is the rule. Legs off if that is what the well needs. A walk-up in Kansas City fails more sofas than a ranch in Raytown — until the ranch has a basement family room and a low header — Raytown ranch and basement moves.
Town homes and condos often have a switchback. HOA rules may ban a pad in the hall. Photos of the piece and the stair: photos that get a written price. How we start from ZIPs: how we quote from two ZIP codes.
Tables, lamps, and the breakable layer
Lamps come apart. Shades in a box that is not crushed under books. Glass tops off and padded, or they stay and we treat the whole table as glass. Remotes, game decks, and loose HDMI go in one bag taped to the stand or in a small carton you can open the first night.
White-glove padding is a different write-up — white glove and white glove vs standard. Standard still means blankets on the sofa and corners on the tables. It does not mean we wrap every figurine unless you booked packing.
Load order
Living room often loads after a garage-first pass if the bay is the tall door — Blue Springs garage-first, garage as a room. Soft goods can fill voids. The sofa waits until we know the destination stair. Unload: path first, then the piece that has to sit where it will live.
Independence split-levels put the living room on a different floor than the door. Lee's Summit two-stories in school season are the same idea — Lee's Summit school-year moves. Grandview long carries: the sofa is a long walk before it is a turn — Grandview 71 corridor. Blue Springs and Independence the same: photos beat “it’s a normal living room.”
When we pack it
If you booked packing, we will box the shelves and the breakables. We will not pretend a same-day unpacked living room is a two-hour job — same-day and short notice. Labour only still needs the glass off the table — labour-only moving. A cleanout of forty years of magazines is closer to when a cleanout is the job.
Bedroom and closet: packing a bedroom. Bathroom: packing a bathroom. Workshop: packing the garage workshop. Beds: beds and disassembly. What stays off the truck: what not to put on the truck. Morning-of: moving-day morning. After you sent the form: after you request a price.
Price and the rest of the house
From [$XXX] an hour for two movers and a truck. Most local moves land between $1,200 and $1,500. Full packing can reach $3,000 to $4,000. A living room with a piano, a wall TV, and a sectional that will not turn moves the hours — what changes the price, what a Kansas City move costs. Houses and apartments. Appliances if a fridge is in the same open plan.
Weekend vs weekday if you need a third person for the sofa: weekend vs weekday. New construction: protect the new floor — new-construction move-in. Rain: wrap at the door — rain and ice. Storage: sofa first, path left — storage unit loading, local only. Downsizing: senior downsizing. Offices with a lobby sofa: office moves, offices.
Johnson County living rooms — Overland Park, Olathe, Leawood, Lenexa, Shawnee — same packing, often a wider door and a tighter basement rec room. Those area pages stay unpublished. Live list: service areas. Johnson County checklist. Compare the same room: comparing Kansas City movers. Four weeks.

Frequently asked questions
Do you pack the books?
If you booked packing. Small boxes. A 50-pound carton of hardbacks is how a hand goes.
Will you take the TV off the wall?
If we agreed. Mounts stay or go — say which. See TVs and electronics.
The sectional is three pieces.
Tell us. Three pieces that will not turn are still three turns. Photos of the landing.
Can I leave the shelves loaded?
You can. We will still have to empty them to tip the case, or leave the case and box the shelves. Either way it is time.
Is the living room in the hourly rate?
Yes. From [$XXX] for two movers and a truck. Packing is extra per box if you want us to box it.
