Packing the dining room for a Kansas City move

Leaves out, chairs stacked right, glass off the buffet. How we pack a Kansas City dining room — the table is furniture, the cabinet is a different job.

The dining room is a table people treat like a crate and a cabinet they treat like a table. Leaves come out. Chairs do not nest in a pile that scrapes the finish. Glass leaves the buffet. The kitchen is next door and last — how to pack a kitchen. The living room is the other show room — packing the living room. This page is the dining room. Two ZIP codes: Get my price.

Per box if you book it: standard $10–20, wardrobe $25–30, dish pack $30–40 — packing. A china or curio in this room is not a sideboard — china cabinets, china and glass. Pack order: what to pack first. Labels: room on two sides — how to label boxes.

What to finish before we arrive

  • Leaves out of the table and in a bag or a flat wrap — not loose under a chair
  • Pads and felt off the top if you want them to stay a set
  • Glass and stemware out of the buffet — dish packs, not a drawer of crystal
  • Chairs clear of the path — we will pad them; we will not guess a stack
  • What is not coming marked — what you are not taking
  • A chandelier you want down — say so. We are movers. We will not rewire it unless we agreed it

Hardware for leaves and table bolts goes in a labelled bag taped to the underside or in an OPEN FIRST box, not a junk drawer we will not open. Same habit as beds — beds and disassembly. Morning-of: moving-day morning. Kids and pets off the rug — kids and pets.

The table and the turn

A dining table on a landing is a turn problem before it is a weight problem. Measure the well — furniture that will not turn, stairs and tight turns. Legs off if that is what the stair needs. A walk-up fails more tables than a ranch — until the ranch has a basement dining you never used — Raytown ranch, Independence split-levels.

A long carry with a glass-top table is hours, not a hope — long carry and shuttle. Elevator door vs table width: elevator reservations. Town home switchback: town homes.

Buffet, hutch, and the glass you left in it

Empty the buffet. Do not leave platters “to save time.” That is how you pack twice after the landing. Contents follow the kitchen method — plates standing, glasses wrapped — dish packs $30–40. A hutch with glass doors is the china-cabinet rule: shelves out, three layers. We will pack that room if you booked it. We will not invent a white-glove unpack into the new china closet unless you booked that — white glove, white glove vs standard.

A piano against the dining wall is a piano — pianos, piano moves, baby grand ([REAL JOB] stays). A safe in the closet off the dining room is a safe — safes, safes and gun safes.

When this room is still last week’s kitchen

Some Kansas City houses eat in the dining room and pack the kitchen last. Fine. Do not store the open spice rack on the table the morning we need the table. Week-before: empty the heavy drawers — what movers need the week before. Four weeks: four weeks. What to tell us: what to tell us.

Bathroom, bedroom, kids, office, garage if that is also a room: bathroom, bedroom, kids’ rooms, home office, garage, workshop. Labour only still needs this room boxed if you want it to land as a dining room — labour-only.
