Wardrobe boxes vs leaving clothes in drawers
Hang what will crease. Empty the dresser if we have to tip it. How we decide wardrobe boxes versus clothes left in drawers on a Kansas City move.
A wardrobe box is a closet that travels. Clothes in a drawer are weight inside a dresser. They are not the same decision. Packing a bedroom is the room. Mattress bags is the bed. This page is hangers versus drawers. Two ZIP codes: Get my price.
If you book packing: wardrobe $25–30, standard $10–20, dish pack $30–40 — packing. Dumping a closet into garbage bags is how you iron on Saturday. We will not write “licensed and insured.”
Use a wardrobe when
- Suits, dresses, uniforms, anything that will crease into a fight
- You want hangers to stay hangers — leave them on the bar
- The closet is a life’s worth and you are not folding it this week
- Kids’ school clothes that have to work Monday — packing the kids’ rooms, Lee's Summit school-year
- You booked us to pack the closets — that is time, and it goes on the sheet
Do not overfill a wardrobe until the bar bows. Do not stand a wardrobe on a wet porch — rain and ice, winter moving day. Label the closet it is going to, not “clothes” — how to label boxes. Spare-room closets first — what to pack first.
Leave clothes in drawers when
The path is straight, the dresser is not a tip, and the drawers are light — folded tees, not books and tools. Heavy drawers come out. We would rather tape empty drawers and carry a lighter box than discover a full file of paper on a Brookside landing — stairs and tight turns, walk-ups, furniture that will not turn.
Jewelry, passports, and the watch you care about do not stay in a drawer you assume we will not open. Those ride with you — what not to put on the truck. The week before: empty what is heavy — what movers need the week before. Pads on the dresser either way — how we pad and wrap furniture.
Garbage bags are not a third option we like
A clear bag of hanging clothes tears on a stair and becomes a long carry of hangers. If you must bag, use a real bag, tape it, and treat it as a box that will fail in heat — July and August. A long carry with bags is how you pack twice — long carry and shuttle. Labour only still needs a plan for the closet — labour-only.
Dressers, landings, and the closet that is a room
A dresser that came in through the garage in 1998 may not turn on a Waldo landing — Waldo brick, Independence split-levels. Photo of the piece and the stair — photos that get a written price. Elevator: elevator reservations. Town home: town homes. Beds last — beds and disassembly, mattress bags. Morning-of: first-night bag off the truck — moving-day morning, kids and pets.
Kitchen last — how to pack a kitchen. Living room, dining, bathroom, office, garage: living room, dining room, bathroom, home office, garage, workshop. What is not coming: what you are not taking. Downsizing a closet is often the real job — senior downsizing, when a cleanout is the job, cleanouts.

Frequently asked questions
Can we leave clothes in the dresser?
If the drawers are light and we do not have to tip it. Heavy drawers come out. Jewelry rides with you.
Are wardrobe boxes worth it?
For what hangs and creases, yes. $25–30 if we pack them. Garbage bags are how you iron on Saturday.
Will you pack the closets?
If you booked it. Say which closets. We will not guess the guest room vs the master.
What about a walk-up?
Assume drawers come out. A full dresser on a third-floor turn is a different hour count.
Kids’ clothes — wardrobe or drawer?
School clothes that have to work Monday: wardrobe or a tote you keep. See packing the kids’ rooms.
Say which closets we pack
Two ZIP codes and whether hangers stay on the bar or drawers stay light. We will write the wardrobe count, not a pile of bags.
