Fridge prep for a Kansas City local move

Empty it, defrost the freezer, pull the water line if it has one. How we move a refrigerator on a Kansas City day — and what we will not haul full.

Empty the fridge the night before. Defrost the freezer if it ices up. A full fridge is weight, water, and a smell on a warm truck. Washer and dryer is hoses and fittings. Basement appliances is the flight. This page is the refrigerator. Two ZIP codes: Get my price.

From [$XXX] an hour for two movers and a truck inside a house move — two movers and a truck, appliances. Hookup at the other end is part of the job where the fittings match. A new water line through a cabinet is not a moving-day add-on. We will not write “licensed and insured.”

The night before

  • Eat or pack out what you can. Ice packs for the last few hours if you must
  • Defrost a freezer that builds ice — towels on the floor, not a hope
  • Empty door shelves. Jars become projectiles
  • If it has a water line, know where the valve is — we will say what we can disconnect
  • Tape nothing yet. We tape doors when we move it — how we pad and wrap furniture
  • Medications that lived in the door ride with you — what not to put on the truck

Open food that will rot is not a box. Sealed dry goods can go in a kitchen carton — how to pack a kitchen, what to pack first. The week before is when you stop restocking — what movers need the week before. Morning-of: coffee kit out, fridge empty — moving-day morning.

Heat, ice, and a closed box

July and August: a full freezer across a hot lot is a different hour count — July and August. Leave the house air on if you have the keys. Winter: a fridge on an iced bulkhead is a delay — winter moving day, rain and ice. We will not haul a leaking freezer and call it done.

At the other end it needs to stand before you plug it back. We will say how we handle that on the job, not in a generic blog promise. A third-floor walk-up fridge turns the same corners as a sofa — measure first — walk-ups, stairs and tight turns, furniture that will not turn.

Water lines, ice makers, and what we will not invent

If the fridge has a water line, tell us. We disconnect what the valve allows. A crushed copper line or a filter housing we have not seen is a tradesperson. Unusual fittings at the new place: say so this week, not on the landing — what to tell us. Same rule as a gas dryer — washer and dryer.

A second fridge in the garage is a room if the garage is still full — garage as a room, Blue Springs garage-first, workshop. A freezer in the basement is the flight — basement washers, Raytown ranch.

New construction with a kitchen that is not trimmed: new-construction. Storage as a middle stop, local only: storage. We will not write an interstate hold because the freezer is full. Labour only still needs it empty if we have to tip it — labour-only.

Not the only awkward thing in the kitchen

Dining room glass is a different pack — packing the dining room, china and glass. A piano in the next room is still a piano — piano moves, baby grand ([REAL JOB] stays). Safessafes. Hot tubs. Pool tables. White glovewhite glove vs standard.

Per box: standard $10–20, wardrobe $25–30, dish pack $30–40 — packing. Labels: how to label boxes. Living room, bedroom, bathroom, kids, office: living room, bedroom, bathroom, kids’ rooms, home office. What is not coming: what you are not taking. Beds and TVs: beds, TVs.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to empty it?

Yes, as much as you can. A full fridge is weight and mess. Ice packs for the last few hours if you must.

How long should it stand before I plug it in?

We will say on the job. Do not plug a tipped fridge the minute it hits the pad.

It has a water line.

Tell us. We disconnect what the valve allows. A new line through a cabinet is a tradesperson.

Second fridge in the garage?

Same empty-and-defrost rule. Say it on the form. See garage as a room.

Can you take only the refrigerator?

Yes. Stairs still matter. Two ZIP codes on the form.
